Abstract:

Semiotics is an investigation into the implicit and hidden meanings of the text. In light of this science of signs, many stories written for children and teenagers become more innovative and effective. The novella by Hushang Moradi Kermani entitled Soft Pillow is enriched with countless signs in its elements, each representing new concepts. The current study uses a descriptive–analytical method to examine the significations of the title and elements of this novella using the semiotic theory of Peirce. The findings show that the title of this novel is the author's invention and a symbolic sign, the integration of which into intra-contextual elements would represent concepts such as using the power of words, seizing the opportunity, the value of wisdom, paying attention to the young generation, and the importance of the role of women in the society.

Abstract:

Background: Schizophrenia is one of the most important and disabling mental disorders in the world. Males and females are equally affected. Diagnosis is a very difficult problem in this disorder. Because the diagnostic systems such as ICD-IO and DSM-IV are mainly subjective, they are not valid and reliable. Essentially, in the future, we will need to more objective criteria in psychiatry especially in diagnosis of schizophrenia. Neurological Soft signs are an example of these objective criteria. In this study we evaluated the prevalence of neurological Soft signs in schizophrenic patients and compared it with the prevalence of these signs in other psychotic patients (except mood disorders with psychotic features) and normal subjects. Methods: We compared the neurological Soft signs (sensory motor integration, motor. Coordination, consequent complex motor acts, primary reflexes, and eye movements) in 30 schizophrenic patients, 30 other psychotic patients (other than mood disorders with psychotic features) and 30 normal subjects. Diagnosis of schizophrenia and also other psychoses were based on DSM-IN criteria. Normal subjects have been selected form the staff of Roozbeh hospital randomly. Results: The difference between the means of motor coordination subscale of neurological Soft signs in schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders (other than mood disorders with psychotic features) were significant (P value<0.04). There were no significant differences between the means of other subscales of neurological Soft signs in two groups of patients. Conclusion: There are some disturbances of motor coordination subscale of neurological Soft signs in patients with schizophrenia. It seems that, these disturbances are evidence of involvements of basal ganglia, motor cerebral cortex, and cerebellum. So it may be suggested that motor coordination as a marker can be used in differentiation between the schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders.

Abstract:

In this paper a new isolating system is introduced for short to mid-rise buildings. In comparison to conventional systems such as LRB and HRB, the proposed system has the advantage of no need to cutting edge technology and has low manufacturing cost. This system is made up of two orthogonal pairs of Pillow-shaped rollers that are located between flat bed and plates. By using this system in two perpendicular directions, building can move in all horizontal directions with respect to its foundation. Due to the Pillow shape of the roller, this system has self-centering capability which causes it to return to its original position after the earthquake. The rolling friction force between Pillows and their bed creates some damping in the system which prevents it from further oscillation after earthquake excitations diminish. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the proposed isolation system’s performance under different earthquake excitations. First of all general features of the proposed isolators have been introduced followed by the analytical equations of the system. Vertical bearing capacity and the effects of the thickness of Pillows has been investigated using ABAQUS Software. It has been shown that for a pair of Pillows of 58 cm width, 45 cm height and 100 cm length the vertical load bearing capacity of the system is more than 300 tons. The period of system with respect to the height and radius of curvature of the rollers, and seismic response of a building, assumed as a rigid body resting on isolators, has been studied subjected to simultaneous effects of horizontal and vertical excitations. It has been shown that the proposed system can reduce the absolute acceleration in the building around 78% in average, while the building’s maximum displacement is around 1.77 times of the ground in average.

Abstract:

Introduction: Sleep is an essential element for maintaining health, which is associated with several factors in improving its quality, including the use of a suitable Pillow that, with effective support, can support the spine in the neck area and it prevents complications such as headache, neck pain and shoulder pain. The purpose of this study was to provide a suitable Pillow design in accordance with the dimensions of Iranian people for proper support in both back and flank positions. Method: 84 volunteers (40 males and 44 females) with an average age of 29/47 years (SD=7/91) were enrolled. Anthropometric characteristics such as head width in the ear area, head length, head height, etc. were determined using a caliper, a Canon SX60HS camera, a digimizer Software, Excel and SPSS version 20. Different percentiles of the body dimensions of men and women were calculated. The findings were used to calculate the dimensions of different parts of the ergonomic Pillow. Results: Based on different dimensions of the head, neck and shoulder area in the sample, the Pillow was designed with a width of 70 and a depth of 26/4 cm for men and a width of 65 and a depth of 26/4 cm for women. Conclusion: It is anticipated that the Pillow designed according to anthropometric measurements of Iranian subjects can reduce head and neck pain and spinal problems. It is also recommended that other research has to be done to standardize the dimensions and type of Pillow material in all parts of Iran.

Abstract:

The Forumad ophiolite Pillow lavas crop out at west of Sabzevar and at the periphery of north central Iran microcontinent. These lavas include Upper Cretaceous pelagic limestone with microfossils and are classified in two Late Turonian-Santonian and Coniacian-Late Campanian groups. These basaltic Pillow lavas have tubular and flattened forms, with external (vitrified), medial (variolite) and internal (intergranuler) parts. Each part has its own texture with mineral composition of clinopyroxene ± plagioclase ± olivine. The medial part is characterized by formation of skeletal crystals of olivine and lesser extend of plagioclase, indicating high nucleation rate. The nature of Late Turonian-Santonian lavas is tholeiitic and Coniacian-Late Campanian lavas are tholeiitic and calc-alkaline. Despite of enrichment in LILE, relative depletion of HFSE, different enrichment in LREE and various linear trends of HREE which suggest the formation of Pillow lavas in the arc environment and the heterogeneous mantle with varying degrees of partial melting, but low ratios of Th/ Yb, La/ Nb, Ce/ Nb and Ce/ Th indicate that they are more inclined to intermediate between IAB and MORB environments. Unlike Late Turonian – Santonian lavas, high ratios of La/Yb, Nb/ Yb in Late Coniacian – Late Campanian lavas represent mantle fertility and decrease of Nb/ Ta ratios as well as relative increase of Th exhibit the effect of partial melting of subducted slab in genesis of these lavas. The depth of partial melting was 40 to 70 km in the spinel lherzolite stability zone. It seems that the formation of Forumad ophiolitic Pillow lavas is accrued in a marginal basin to a back arc basin of a supra-subduction zone.

Abstract:

Rolling-based seismic isolation systems, in which rollers of circular or non-circular section are used, are less expensive and easier to manufacture. However, this type of isolation suffers from either lack of restoring or re-centering capability, or weakness against uplift forces. To resolve the first shortcoming the use of elliptical as well as Pillow-shape rolling parts has been suggested, and for the second one, using some uplift restrainers has been proposed. In this paper a kind of base isolating device, called Pillow-Shape Seismic Base Isolation System (PSBIS) is introduced which has both re-centering and uplift-restrained capabilities. The paper is concentrated on derivation of equation governing the motion of PSBIS device. To derive this equation, since the behavior of the device is highly nonlinear the use of Lagrange equation of motion is the most appropriate approach. For this purpose, considering the rotation angle of the Pillow-shape roller as the generalized coordinate, the horizontal and vertical components of the Pillow-shape roller acceleration have been formulated and the kinetic and potential energy terms as well as the virtual work of the non-conservative, resulted from rolling resistance and seismic forces, have been developed to be substituted in the basic Lagrange equation. To verify the derived equation of motion a simplified sample of the PSBIS device was built and used experimentally, and also the motion of the Pillow-shape parts was traced by drawing them in Auto-CAD Software. Results show the validity of the derived equation of motion.

Abstract:

The Upper Cretaceous Ganj complex, a part of the Jazmurian ophiolitic belt, is located on the western boundary of Jazmurian depression and separated from Kahnuj ophiolitic complex by north-south trending Jiroft fault. The complex consists of lava flows, Pillow lavas, acidic plutonic and sedimentary rocks which are intruded by northwest-southeast trending dykes. It does not resemble a classical ophiolitic sequence due to lacking of intrusive crustal and mantle sections. The basaltic Pillow lavas occur as flattened-tubular shape normal and mega sized bodies with bread crust crack surfaces. They show three textural zones from surface to interior: glassy, glassy and crystalline, and holycrystalline. Each zone characterized by different textures and varying assemblages of plagioclase ± olivine ± pyroxene and opaque. The glassy surface of the Pillows frequently consists of one or rarely multiple rinds: sideromelane, dark tachylyte; and tachylyte with elongated vesicles. On Nb/Y versus Zr/TiO2 and SiO2 versus Nb/Y diagrams the Pillow lavas plot in the field of basalt and sub-alkaline respectively. The relatively low immobile trace elements ratios are another sign of their tholeiitic nature. The absence of Eu anomaly on chondrite-normalized REE patterns suggests insignificances of plagioclase fractionation, or magma was relatively oxidized. They are similar to transitional basalts that lie between enriched MORB and OIB and some BABB. However enrichment in incompatible elements, depletion in Nb and low La/Nb ratios (0.94-1.81) are signature of BABB. They were formed by 15-30% partial melting of plagioclase lherzolite where fractionation was controlled by removal of olivine, spinel and clinopyroxene.

Abstract:

The Makran accretionary prism in southeastern Iran contains extensive Mesozoic melange zones and large intact ophiolites, representing remnants of the Neotethys oceanic crust that was subducted beneath Eurasia. To the north of the Makran accretionary prism, the Jazmurian depression lies which is a subduction-related back-arc basin. The Ganj Complex is one of the ophiolitic complexes, located on the west side of the Makran accretionary prism and Jazmurian depression, and is bounded by the Jiroft fault system in the west. The Ganj Complex with an Upper Cretaceous age is composed mainly of lava flows, Pillow lavas, acidic plutonic rocks and sedimentary rocks, which are intruded by northwest-southeast trending dykes and does not ressemble a classical ophiolitic sequence. It lacks the intrusive crustal and mantle sections. The Ganj Complex Pillow lavas, mainly olivine basaltic, occur as normal and as mega-sized bodies and are mostly flattened - tubular in shape with bread crust crack surfaces. They show three textural zones from the top glassy (zone 1) through the intermediate (zone 2) to the holocrystaline interior (zone 3), with each characterized by varying assemblages of plagioclase and olivine that form different textures. The Ganj Pillow basalts are characterized by variolitic, porphyritic, microlitic-porphyritic, intersertal, intergranular and amigdaloidal textures. Mineralogically, they consist of plagioclase ± olivine ±pyroxene+opaque. The outer glassy surfaces of Pillows frequently consist of one, or rarely multiple rinds. The rinds consist of three layers, which from surface inwards are: (1) sideromelane, (2) dark tachylyte; and (3) tachylyte with elongated vesicles.
